Running time: 90 minutes
Italian submarine base - after the debriefing flotilla is leaving on another patrol. It is 1942 and Italians have already lost several subs in battles against British. This time submarine Alfa Tau is heavily damaged and another sub is lost. While Alfa Tau is being repaired in the dry dock the crew is sent home on leave. They need to rest before next patrol since British are dominating the sea and air, so even reaching the patrol zone could be tricky.
Italian war movie filmed during the World War 2 and aboard real submarine Enrico Toti that was in active service at that time. The script of the film is similiar to British We Dive at Dawn and 2/3 of the movie shows what impact war has on the crew and their families. Of course it is view twisted by the fact that war was still on and making movie that would show how depressed the people are would be insane, so we see love, family and almost normal life away from the base.
But the later part of the movie is made with realism that could be compared to Polish movie The Eagle - Italians have made a remarkable effort to make it very realistic and the effect is much, much better even comparing to American movies that were made after the war (like f.e. Run Silent, Run Deep). For the patrol part of the movie it is worth to see it.
Also the patrol includes real events (that took place in October 1940) which is battle between Enrico Toti and British submarine HMS Triad. In the gunnery and torpedo duel the Italian submarine have sunked HMS Triad near Malta.
