The Bedford Incident (1965, United States)

Categories: navy moviessubmarine movies

Running time: 100 minutes

Language: English

During early stage of Cold War American destroyer USS Bedford is on patrol in the Arctic area. Journalist Ben Munceford is transported on board together with the new ship’s doctor Chester Potter. From the beginning Captain Finlander doesn’t let them feel they are needed on his ship - his crew does not really need doctors, since none of them is ever sick, and the journalist who doubts the sense of Cold War is not welcome. Potter soon learns why the crew members are never sick - they would not dare show Finlander they are not fit, even though some of them are exhausted by constant pressure from captain. But Finlander ignores Potter’s suggestions and finds very little time to speak with Munceford. Just like captain Ahab in Moby Dick, Finlander is simply obsessed with tracing Soviet submarines - aboard USS Bedford he installed full laboratory that is capable of detecting the garbage left by the submarine crews in the middle of ocean. While Munceford is given a tour around the destroyer Soviet submarine is detected and captain puts crew on alert. Together with his adviser, Wolfgang Schrepke, former U-Boat captain, Finlander tries to corner the Soviets among the icebergs.

The Bedford Incident is one of the Cold War era movies showing how dangerous, and at the same time stupid, the Cold War was. When military blocks, who try to initiate open conflict are playing with nuclear weapons that could destroy whole countries it takes only a spark to start the fire that could end the human kind. Very good cast, high realism and fascinating study of state of minds people involved in Cold War.
